In the heart of Texas lies the vibrant city of San Antonio. Home to nearly 1.5 million residents, San Antonio thrives with a bustling downtown area, numerous historical sites, and a proud heritage and culture. Whether it’s your final destination or just a stop on a larger road trip through Texas, you want to take a look at these tips to make the most of your San Antonio trip.
Visit the historic sites, even if you aren’t from Texas.
You don’t have to be a native Texan to appreciate the iconic historic sites that San Antonio has to offer. In the heart of Downtown stands the Alamo, the site of one of most famous battles in the fight for Texas independence (and one of the most famous scenes in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure). You can also learn about the Spanish settlement of the area at the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, which embodies nearly three centuries of rich history and culture
Indulge in (at least) one Tex-Mex meal.
You can’t visit San Antonio and not enjoy a plate of enchiladas, Spanish rice, and refried beans. The city is home to some of the most mouth-watering Tex-Mex that exists, as well as the best tacos in the state.
Shop at Market Square.
The historic Market Square sits on a plaza that was once a gift to settlers from the King of Spain in 1730. The area has turned into a three-block pedestrian mall and holds the title of the largest Mexican market in the United States. Discover unique curios, handcrafted art, and gourmet Mexican cuisine in this lively plaza.
Explore the River Walk.
Downtown you’ll also find the River Walk, which has something to offer for everyone. Shop at the Rivercenter Mall or the stores that line the river, lounge at a cafe, dine in one of the area’s many restaurants, or simply stroll along the river.
Get an adrenaline rush at Six Flags Fiesta Texas.
Love roller coasters? If so, you definitely won’t want to miss the theme park experience at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. The 200 acre park is filled with dozens of thrilling rides, shows, and fun family activities.
Take in a 360 degree view of the city at the Tower of the Americas.
This 750-foot tower was constructed for the 1968 World’s Fair and remains the tallest building in San Antonio. Take the elevator to the observation deck to get a stunning, 360 degree view of the city. And if you’re feeling fancy, enjoy a meal at the Chart House Restaurant, which is known for its award winning menu.
